How to Tell if an Adjustable Bed Control Box Is Bad

The control box is the part under an adjustable bed that receives the remote signal and sends power to the motors. When the bed does not respond, the control box may be the problem—but loose cables, a bad power supply, remote trouble, or a failed motor can look very similar.

Quick Answer

An adjustable-bed control box may be bad if the base has power, the remote is working, cables are secure, and neither motor responds after a full reset. A control box may also be the problem when it has an error light, beeps, repeatedly clicks, or sends power to only one section of the bed.

Signs the Control Box May Be Bad

A control-box failure can cause several different adjustable-bed problems. Look for these signs:

  • The remote lights up, but neither section of the bed moves.
  • The bed has power, but only the head or foot section responds.
  • The control box clicks, beeps, flashes, or shows an error indicator.
  • The base stopped responding after a power interruption or after being moved.
  • All visible cables are secure, but the base still does not respond.
  • The bed does not work after the remote and base have both been reset.

How to Check Whether the Control Box Is the Problem

1
Confirm that the base has power.
Check that the wall outlet works, the power supply is firmly plugged in, and the power-supply cable is fully seated in the control box. If the base has no power, the control box may not be the problem.
2
Check whether the remote is working.
Put in fresh batteries and make sure the remote is paired and unlocked. A remote can light up even when it is not sending a reliable command to the base.
3
Unplug the bed before checking the control box.
Disconnect the base from the wall before reaching underneath it. Find the control box and check each cable connection without forcing or moving any plugs to different ports.
4
Press each connector firmly into place.
Check the power-supply plug, motor cables, remote receiver, and any sync cable connected to the control box. A loose plug can stop one motor—or the entire base—from responding.
5
Look for damaged or pinched wires.
Inspect the visible cables for damage, crushing, or a wire caught in the moving frame. Do not use the base if you see exposed wire, damaged insulation, or a melted connector.
6
Power-cycle the base.
Leave the base unplugged for about 60 seconds. Reconnect it, wait briefly, and try the remote again. A full power reset can clear a temporary communication error.
7
Check what still works.
If one motor works and another does not, the control box may still be working and the issue may be with the non-working motor or cable. If nothing works after power, remote, and cable checks, the control box becomes more likely.

Do Not Swap or Force Control-Box Connections

Do not move plugs to different ports, force connectors, cut wires, or install a control box from another bed unless the manufacturer confirms it is compatible. Control boxes are matched to specific motors, remotes, power supplies, and adjustable-base models.

When a Control Box Is More Likely to Be Bad

The control box is more likely the problem when these checks are all true:

  • The wall outlet and power supply are working correctly.
  • The remote has fresh batteries and is paired correctly.
  • All visible control-box and motor cables are secure and undamaged.
  • Nothing is blocking the frame from moving.
  • The base still will not respond after a full power reset.
  • The manufacturer identifies the control box as the failed part for your model.
